Use 2D images instead of 3D models when appropriate.

The first render is with a hi-res tree model with about 26 k polygons, (Figure 1).  Realize that if you wanted a dense tree it would take a much larger polygon count.

The render time: 10.18 min.
File size: 3100 kb

The second is a 2D image from Jungle 3D.  

The image was placed on a 2D plane. The material editor setting are shown in Figure 3.

The render time: 2:06

This 2D image only used one plane.  There  are techniques that use intersecting planes to make sure shadows are reproduce accurately.   Additional planes will add some more to the render time.

A 2D object renders much faster than a high resolution 3D model.  Also it will use less memory and the file will take less disk space.  My suggestion is to use the 3D trees for close ups.  For example if you have a shot were you are looking through the branches and the branches are very close to the camera.  Use the 2D image for medium and far objects.
