Render time can be reduced by replacing Boolean mapped objects with bump mapped objects.

The first render is with three columns made using Boolean cylinders from the Boolean Objects menu, (Figure 1).  Each column contains 25 cylinders.

The render time: 1:55 min.

The second is made with only three cylinders.  The grooves are made with a  2D image as a bump map, (Figure 2).

The render time: 1:06

You will notice that there are some differences between the two.  I think that with a little more work a much more convincing bump map could be created.  Thus making the columns almost identical.

A bump mapped object renders a little faster than the Boolean object.  My suggestion is to use the Boolean object near objects. The bump mapped object could be used for medium and far objects.  The difference in render time may not seem great.  However, if you have a large number of objects or doing an animation the savings could be substantial.
